Phillie Phanatic Visits St. Cecilia's School

Reading Can Take You Places

Little did Mrs. Grugan’s grade three classroom know what amazing things would happen when they entered the “Be a Phanatic About Reading” Program. In September, the third grade students in Room 33 promised to read 15 minutes each night and to fill out reading logs signed by their parents.  A few months later, Mrs. Grugan sent the evaluations to the “Be a Phanatic About Reading” Program which is sponsored by the Philadephia Phillies and Verizon.  On December 17th, the St. Cecilia School community learned that it had won a visit from the Phillie Phanatic and that there was also a special surprise coming.

Well, on January 26th the Phillie Phanatic came to school bringing the 2008 World Series trophy.  Mrs. Grugan read the Phanatic’s new book, The Phillie Phanatic’s Parade of Champions (not yet published) to the whole school while the Phanatic acted out the story as it was viewed on a big screen.

It was a day filled with a confetti parade, the Phanatic, a first-hand look at the World Series trophy, an award plaque, newspaper and TV recognition, and all the memories that this special day brought to our school.  Everyone had fun! But best of all, we learned that reading can make exciting things happen!
